General Session

The NILUG general session will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the River of Friends Church in Post Falls, ID. The meeting starts at 1pm and runs until about 4pm. For this meeting, we show off all the cool new gear we all got for Christmas, and help anyone who has questions, of course. Update There will also be a presentation on Samba.

Technical Session

The NILUG technical session will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the F1 For Help Computer Store in Rathdrum, ID. The technical session is devoted to helping users with installations and configuration of Linux on their computers. We can help you install that new Linux distro on the new computer you got for Christmas, so plan to attend if you need help.

No technical meeting will be held this month, since the date for the NILUG technical session would have been Saturday, December 26, 2009 – the day after Christmas.

General Session

The NILUG general session will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the River of Friends Church in Post Falls, ID. The meeting starts at 1pm and generally runs until about 4pm. For this meeting, there will be a short description of the changes that were implemented in Ubuntu 9.10. There will then be a tutorial on how to turn a set of JPG images into a video slideshow.

GNU/Linux Security: Linux House vs Microsoft House

Here’s another very good article: “GNU/Linux Security: Linux House vs Microsoft House“. It explains the basic differences between security in Windows and security in Linux. This explanation reminds me of the tale of the Three Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf. Windows is the pig with the straw house and Linux is the pig with the brick house.

Debunking Some Linux Myths

The article “Debunking Some Linux Myths” does an excellent job of destroying some of the myths propagated by opponents of the operating system. I would recommend reading the article if you are interested in Linux, but you have picked up a bad impression of it.

General Session

The NILUG general session will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the River of Friends Church in Post Falls, ID. The meeting starts at 1pm and runs until everyone runs out of gas. We have no talk scheduled for this session, so we will answer questions, help new users with their problems and help with installations.

Technical Session

The NILUG technical session will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the F1 For Help Computer Store in Rathdrum, ID. The technical session is devoted to helping users with installations and configuration of Linux on their computers.

NILUG Technical Session for September, 2009

The NILUG technical session is held on the fourth Saturday of each month at F1 For Help in Rathdrum, ID. This month, the meeting will be held on 26 September. The meeting starts at the usual time of 1pm. See our Meeting Information page for details of how to get to the F1 For Help computer store. Our thanks go out to Joe for volunteering his store for the meetings.

The NILUG technical sessions are devoted to helping users install Linux on their computers, answering questions about Linux and Open Source software, and answering questions about how to do things in Linux. Everyone is invited to attend this session. No question is too silly to ask, as long as it is about Linux or Open Source instead of Windows.

Installing, Configuring and Running VirtualBox 3 on Ubuntu

September 2009 NILUG Meeting

The September 2009 meeting of the North Idaho Linux Users Group will be held on Saturday, 12 September, 2009 at the River of Life Friends Church in Post Falls. The meeting will start at 1pm. Everyone is invited to attend. As usual, we are available to answer your questions about Linux and open source software, as well as to help you install that software.

NOTE: The following presentation is is back on for this meeting
This month, Michael Burton will make a detailed presentation on how to install, configure and use the VirtualBox software on Ubuntu Linux 9.04. The purpose of the presentation is to show how you can use an operating system in a virtual environment to talk to real world devices, like extra hard drives and USB devices.

August 2009 NILUG Meeting

The August 2009 meeting of the North Idaho Linux Users Group will be held on Saturday, 8 August, 2009 at the River of Life Friends Church in Post Falls. The meeting will start at 1pm. Everyone is invited to attend, especially those who are tired of having their computers infected with viruses, spyware, trojans or adware. Bring your computer along if you want to try Linux. We will help you determine if Linux will run on your machine or, if you want, we will help you install it on your computer.

We are also available to answer any questions about Linux and all the other open source software that comes with Linux.
