May 2008 NILUG Meeting – InstallFest & Demo Session

Filed under: Uncategorized — nilug @ 8:20 am

We will be having a special meeting on the 2nd Saturday of May. The entire meeting will be devoted to demonstrating various distributions of Linux, and installing Linux on new user’s machines (if you want us to do that).

We will have a table or two set up to give people a hands-on view of various Linux distributions. We will be showing distributions on a rotating basis on a big screen projector.

Many Linux distributions come on ‘Live CDs’, which means you can run it on your computer without it even touching your hard disk. That allows the software to be evaluated with no impact on the evaluation system. We will have free copies of some of these live distribution disks, as well as free copies of non-live linux distributions, available to those who want them.

If you want to install Linux on your computer, bring the computer along and we will help you install the operating system. Linux is very tolerant of other operating systems, and it will co-exist on your hard disk with Windows, if there is enough room on the disk for both. By the way, if you bring your computer, don’t forget the mouse, keyboard and monitor.

This meeting will start on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 1:00pm. The location is River of Life Friends Church in Post Falls, ID. You don’t have to be a NILUG member to attend this meeting and there will be no pressure for you to join.

Filed under: Uncategorized — nilug @ 3:58 pm

The next North Idaho Linux User Group meeting will be on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the River of Life Friends Church in Post Falls. The meeting will start at 1:00 pm.

We will be discussing the addition of another monthly meeting, so one can be dedicated to social networking, open source talks and question answering, while the other can be used as a technical session, including installations.

There is one scheduled talk for this meeting. A presentation on Ubuntu 8.04 will be given by a member who has been using it for the last month. Be sure to attend if you wish to find out about this new version, which will officially be released on the 24th of April.
